Synopsis/Details
Montre, a young Black kid, struggles to come up with a subject for his class writing assignment. His teacher uses his classmate Cody's paper as an example: a trip to Seagull Sam's Water Adventure. When she walks away, Cody teases Montre for being too poor to visit Seagull Sam's. Montre throws a crumpled piece of paper at Cody, who feigns being hurt when the teacher happens to look in his direction. Montre is put into isolation for zero-tolerance violence. On the advice of the security guard, once he's inside the isolation room, Montre imagines himself somewhere else. He imagines himself at Seagull Sam's Water Adventure. He meets Seagull Sam himself, a giant anthropomorphic seagull. Seagull Sam informs Montre that he has the whole park to himself. The only ride that he can't go on is the Mega Half-Pipe, which is shut down. Montre enjoys his time at the waterpark. Before he knows it, his isolation time is over. The next day, the teacher sees Montre smack Cody's hand when Cody tries to steal from him. Montre is sent back to isolation. He goes back to Seagull's Sam, but the park is slightly more dour. Seagull Sam still won't let Montre get on the Mega Half-Pipe A few years later, Montre has grown bigger than Cody. Montre pushes Cody, unprovoked. He laughs as the security guards take him to the isolation room. As soon as he's inside, he imagines himself back at Seagull Sam's. The park is overcast and the water is murky. Seagull Sam looks dirty and he smokes a cigarette. He tries to convince Montre to stop coming to the imaginary park. Montre pushes past Seagull Sam and enjoys the park. A high school age Montre slaps a teacher across the face. He's immediately put into isolation. He goes to Seagull Sam's once again. Seagull Sam has bald patches. The park is gross. Seagull Sam lets Montre know that this is his last trip. Montre decides to ride the Mega-Half Pipe. As he removes the OUT OF ORDER sign, Seagull Sam tries to warn him. Montre slides down. He ends up on a prison cot. He's behind bars. Montre cries out, but a guard yells at him. Montre tries to go back to Seagull Sam's, but he can't. All he can do is cry.
