Synopsis/Details
The story opens with DJ CHARLIE P (21) playing at the dance event Dreamspace in 1995. The crowd is electric, and ELLIE (21)—the love of his life—is watching from the front. But there's a sinister undercurrent as the promoter, MICKEY (40s), and his bouncers watch him closely. Flashback to 1991: Charlie and his older brother ROB (19) attend a rave in Wisbech, where Charlie first experiences ecstasy. The high is intoxicating, and he quickly falls in love with the dance scene. Along with his close friends, he dives into the world of underground raves, drugs, and music. However, after a traumatic LSD experience, Charlie spirals into depression. In his darkest moments, Charlie meets JEZ (18), an old friend of Rob’s, who gifts him an old set of record decks which ignites a passion for Djing. When Charlie lands a small gig at a local pub, a chance encounter with another DJ leads him to connect with DAZ (40s), a local club promoter, who gives Charlie a warm-up set at Kings Lynn’s number one rave club, Hypersonic. The stakes rise when Charlie is booked again and faces sabotage from the resident DJ REZ, who spikes his drink before his set. Under the influence, Charlie is unable to beatmix and has to be replaced. Daz is furious and tells him he's finished! The truth emerges though and Daz kicks Rez out, giving Charlie an apology. Charlie suddenly finds himself the new resident DJ at the hottest club in town! Charlie’s ultimate goal is to play at Dreamspace, the biggest rave event in the UK. But despite sending mixtapes, Mickey—the elusive promoter— is a hard nut to crack. Charlie meets Ellie, a beautiful and enigmatic Ravedance flyer girl who catches his attention at a DJ gig in Cromer. The chemistry is undeniable, and Charlie hands her his tape to pass on to the promoters. Ellie calls him soon after with a booking and romance blossoms when he plays there. Charlie organizes his own rave, Dance Riot, with Jez’s help and invites Ellie. The event attracts a big crowd, but Charlie discovers someone has been taking money from the till. Charlie is dismayed to find that the suspicion falls on Jez, but things are left unspoken. Charlie realises to achieve his dream he must find a way of getting Mickey’s attention and sets about producing a record at a DJ’s studio. He presses on, hosting another Dance Riot event with Jez, but this time with his brother Rob handling the cash register. The night is a success, and Charlie plays the dubplate of the track he produced, sending the place crazy. Jez gets a proposition from a drug dealer to smuggle drugs into the clubs by hiding them in Charlie's record box, but he knows that Charlie won't go for it, so he does it behind his back. Charlie’s relationship with Ellie grows stronger and Jez becomes threatened. He orchestrates a scene at a nightclub to make it look like Charlie’s cheating and Ellie storms out, heartbroken. Charlie tries to contact her to explain, but she avoids all his calls. When the phone finally rings, it’s Mickey: he’s booked to play at Dreamspace! But things take a dark turn. After running late for another gig, Charlie drives over the speed limit and police lights flash behind them. Jez panics and throws the drugs from the record box out of the window, but it’s a false alarm and the police drive past. When Charlie realises what he’s been doing, he’s furious! Inside the club, the dealers confront Jez, and they have to leave abruptly after Charlie’s set. They suddenly find themselves in a high-speed chase and are ambushed by gangsters. Charlie and Jez are taken to a warehouse, where BIG MIKE (50s) demands that Charlie smuggle 2,000 pills into Dreamspace. Charlie is crushed, knowing getting caught would ruin his career, not to mention a long prison sentence. Back at his car, Charlie forces Jez to admit he sabotaged his relationship with Ellie. Charlie leaves Jez stranded and returns home, devastated. When the phone rings, it’s Ellie and he explains everything. She agrees to meet him at Dreamscape. The night of the event arrives and Charlie plays an amazing set, whipping the crowd into a frenzy and winning the admiration of Mickey. But the promoter soon gets wind that someone has brought drugs into his club. Suspicion falls on Jez when a bouncer sees a dealer hand money and drugs over to him, and upon leaving, Charlie and Jez are called into Mickey’s office. Is this the end of Charlie’s career, and more importantly, will Big Mike get his money?
