Synopsis/Details
In the small desert town of Independence, New Mexico, a series of mysterious contrails appear in the night sky, hinting at something unnatural. EARL DUNN, a weathered farmer, goes missing after encountering a strange webbing in his barn, leading to a chilling discovery of a predatory species that has been unleashed. The story unfolds through the eyes of CORA MADDOX, an ex-military bus driver, and her son LEO, a tech-savvy teenager obsessed with conspiracy theories. As they navigate the eerie atmosphere of their town, they soon realize that the contrails are not just a harmless phenomenon but a sign of an impending invasion by genetically engineered spiders, part of a government experiment gone awry.
Cora's day begins with a routine bus drive, but it quickly spirals into chaos when she learns about Earl's disappearance. Sheriff ALVAREZ investigates the case but soon becomes a victim himself, falling prey to the monstrous spiders lurking in the shadows. Cora and Leo, determined to uncover the truth, delve deeper into the mystery, leading them to a government lab where they discover the horrifying reality of Project Chimera—a failed experiment that has resulted in the creation of a hive-minded species capable of hunting and killing with terrifying efficiency.
As the spiders begin to attack the townsfolk, Cora and Leo team up with other survivors, including BOONE STRICKLAND, a local hardware store owner, and DARCY, a gas station clerk. They barricade themselves in the Keller’s Supermarket, but the spiders are relentless, breaking through their defenses and causing chaos. The group must fight for their lives as they witness the spiders' horrifying abilities to coordinate and hunt in packs, revealing a level of intelligence that suggests they are more than just mindless creatures.
In a desperate bid for survival, Cora leads the group to the radio tower, hoping to send out a distress signal. However, they soon realize that the military is aware of the situation but is more interested in containment than rescue. As the spiders continue to spread, the survivors face betrayal and loss, culminating in a final showdown at the abandoned mine where the spiders have nested. Cora makes the ultimate sacrifice to destroy the queen spider, igniting a massive explosion that temporarily halts the invasion.
In the aftermath, the military arrives, but instead of acknowledging the truth, they cover up the incident, labeling it a methane explosion. Cora and Leo escape, but the horror is far from over. As they drive away, hints of the spiders' survival linger, suggesting that the threat is not extinguished but merely evolving. The film ends on a chilling note, with Leo showing signs of infection, leaving the audience questioning the true extent of the horror unleashed upon the world.
