Synopsis/Details

Mid-1990s, South Africa and Central Africa.

Joost Bradenbach is an ex-Recce soldier working the door of a Cape Town strip bar - discarded by the new South Africa along with most of his regiment. He's haunted by his failure to take down a child soldier in combat, resulting in the death of one of his men.

When his former protégé Ethan Coetzee recruits him into Strategic Solutions Group, a private military company, Bradenbach signs on. Partly for the money. Partly to rescue his ex-wife Jean Marie from her current financial ruin. But mostly because it's all he knows how to do.

The mission: infiltrate a fortified jungle compound in Zembala (Central Africa), extract Russian bioweapons scientist Anton Pavlenko and the data disk containing his research, and get out before the ZRA - the Zembalan Revolutionary Army - even wake up.
Pavlenko has been coerced into developing a biological weapon for the ZRA's warlord commander Elias Mumbari, a charismatic ideologue who funds his revolution through violence, child soldiers, and the sale of women. The bioweapon, once complete, could ignite a new arms race.

Running parallel: Lucas, a fourteen-year-old boy whose parents are killed in a ZRA massacre. Mumbari recruits him on the spot. Within months, Lucas has become a soldier, a killer, and a believer - precisely what Mumbari made him. Lucas recruits a new boy, Zacharia, in the same way Mumbari recruited him.

The SSG infiltration succeeds. The disk is secured. Pavlenko is extracted. But the scientist refuses to leave without the captive girls held at the compound. Under duress, Coetzee makes the call: get them all. The decision delays their exfil, forces a second chopper to be sent, forcing the squad to set up a defensive position and hold till exfil.

Mumbari arrives with thirty fighters.

The battle is brutal. Coetzee is killed. Three more men die. The squad and the girls board the final exfil chopper - which is destroyed by an RPG before it leaves the ground just before the scientist boards. He's injured, blown back by the explosion.

The bitter truth: The girls are gone. The squad has nothing but Pavlenko, his broken ankle, and the jungle ahead of them.

What follows is a twenty-hour nightmare: evading Mumbari's combined force and a Russian patrol through dense jungle, crossing a ravine in a downpour, running on morphine and discipline.

Bradenbach holds the squad together. Pavlenko slows them down. Botha stays behind as a one-man sniper screen to buy them time as they head to higher ground and their fallback exfil coordinates.

Lucas - watching Mumbari, learning, growing - suggests the high ground. He is becoming what Mumbari built him to be.

The final stand on a jungle ridge: SSG surrounded, outgunned, mortar fire incoming. The rescue chopper arrives. In the evacuation, Pavlenko takes the rounds meant for Radebe and dies.

Lucas crests the ridge with an RPG. Bradenbach - who once froze when facing a child soldier - does not freeze this time. He shoots Lucas dead and is dragged on board.

As the chopper pulls away, Mumbari looks at Lucas's body. He medals Zacharia. The ZRA cheers. The cycle continues.

In the chopper, Botha finds the data disk - smashed by the same rounds that wounded Meijer. The mission is a total failure. Botha holds the broken case.

Niks is nie vir sy eie sake nie. Nothing is ever for its own sake.

Back in Cape Town, Jean Marie offers Bradenbach a future. He knows he is the same man who broke her before. He declines, gets in his bakkie, and drives back toward the SSG base. He is going "home."
