Synopsis/Details
UNDER YTAN / BENEATH THE SURFACE is a Swedish crime thriller with elements of Nordic folk horror, set in Stockholm and the surrounding forests of Värmdö. The film is Swedish and the screenplay is written entirely in Swedish.
Nineteen-year-old Nikola “Niko” Vuković lives two lives. By day, he is a high school student increasingly drawn to his enigmatic teacher, Linnea Andersson. Outside school, he works as a drug courier alongside his closest friends, Abbas and Jesper, under the control of local gang leader Dragan.
When a major delivery in Malmö turns out to be a trap, Nikola narrowly escapes and discovers that Dragan has betrayed him. With both criminals and corrupt authorities closing in, Nikola is forced into hiding and turns to the one person he believes might protect him: Linnea.
Deep in the isolated forests of Värmdö, the relationship between student and teacher crosses a dangerous line as Nikola begins to realize that Linnea has been hiding something far darker than he could have imagined. As betrayal leads to bloodshed and the world around him collapses, the threat hunting Nikola is about to encounter something ancient that does not belong to their world of guns, money and violence.
UNDER YTAN blends contemporary Swedish crime with Nordic folklore in a story about loyalty, desire, betrayal and the monsters hiding beneath ordinary surfaces.
