Synopsis/Details

In September 1940, Polish cavalry officer and resistance organizer Witold Pilecki makes an unthinkable decision. Leaving behind his wife, Maria, and their two young children, he assumes the identity Tomasz Serafiński and deliberately steps into a German roundup in occupied Warsaw. His mission is to be sent to the newly established concentration camp at Auschwitz, discover what is happening behind its barbed wire, organize the prisoners, and get the truth back to the Polish Underground.

Stripped of his name and reduced to prisoner number 4859, Witold endures starvation, forced labor, disease, and calculated brutality. Yet instead of merely surviving, he builds a secret resistance network based on small, compartmentalized cells. The organization steals food and medicine, protects vulnerable prisoners, gathers intelligence, and smuggles reports through released inmates and civilian contacts. As Auschwitz expands from a prison for Polish political detainees into an industrial center of mass murder, Witold records the transports, gas chambers, executions, and the names of victims the Nazis intend to erase.

His reports reach Warsaw and London, but no rescue comes. Believing he must confront military command personally, Witold escapes Auschwitz with two fellow prisoners after nearly three years inside. His proposal for an armed liberation of the camp is rejected as impossible. Reunited with a family that barely recognizes him, he nevertheless returns to the fight, taking part in the Warsaw Uprising before becoming a German prisoner of war.

After Germany’s defeat, Witold completes his Auschwitz report in Italy and accepts another dangerous mission: returning to Soviet-dominated Poland to document the arrests, torture, and political repression of former resistance fighters. Ordered to escape when his cover is compromised, he refuses to abandon his family and the people who depend upon his network. Arrested by the Communist secret police, he is tortured, subjected to a rigged trial, branded a traitor, and sentenced to death by the country he repeatedly risked his life to defend.

In the tradition of Schindler’s List and The Pianist, The Volunteer is both an epic wartime thriller and an intimate family drama. It is the true story of a husband, father, soldier, and witness who fought two totalitarian regimes—and of the names, memories, and truth he refused to let them destroy.

The Writer: Gary Rose

I’m a multi-optioned screenwriter, novelist, retired police detective, and former educator. During my law-enforcement career, I investigated serious crimes and learned the delicate art of negotiating hostage situations—experience that continues to influence the tension, authenticity, and characters found throughout my work. My newest novel and screenplay, ALL IS NOT CALM, is a Christmas action thriller with a simple commercial hook: “Die Hard on a luxury cruise ship.” On Christmas Eve, a former Coast Guard commander must save his estranged wife—the ship’s captain—and hundreds of passengers when a vengeful hijacker turns the vessel into a weapon aimed at a fuel terminal.
