MARNIE CRANE (29) lost everything when her four-year-old daughter Lucy died in a car accident. Two years later, drifting through poverty and grief, she becomes a surrogate for OLIVIA and DEREK VAUGHN - a wealthy couple who can give her the one thing she needs: a second chance. When she gives birth to their daughter Elizabeth, the signed adoption papers feel like a death sentence. She cannot lose another child.
Marnie secretly uses her own egg instead of Olivia's embryo, making Elizabeth biologically hers. She begins surveilling the Vaughn household, befriending Derek, and driving a wedge between him and Olivia. When the genetic screening window threatens to expose her deception, she tampers with the blood draw and manipulates her way out of a retest.
As Olivia grows suspicious, Marnie accelerates her plan. She rents a storage unit, stocks it with supplies, and ambushes Olivia during her morning run on a wooded trail. She drags her to the unit and holds her captive. Then she calls Derek - distraught, grieving - and inserts herself into his home under the guise of comfort. She wears Olivia's clothes, wears her perfume, whispers to Elizabeth that she's her real mother.
Over the next week, Marnie ingratiates herself into Derek's life. She watches him fall apart. She tells him she loves him. He's too broken and afraid to push her away - and in a moment of terror, he lets her kiss him. Marnie believes she's won.
But Olivia, locked in the storage unit, is a survivor. She plays along with Marnie's delusion, telling her she never loved Derek, that Marnie can have him. The lie buys her water and food. Meanwhile, Derek finds the strength to call the police. Detectives COSTA and MARTINEZ arrive at Marnie's stripped apartment. The delusion collapses. Marnie confesses the location. Olivia is rescued.
In the aftermath, Olivia and Derek sit in their dark living room, Elizabeth asleep upstairs. They confess their betrayals - Olivia said she didn't love him; Derek let Marnie kiss him. They are not healed. But they choose to stay.
Marnie is committed to a psychiatric hospital, medicated, hollowed. The only thing she has left is a photograph of Lucy, pressed into her hand by a nurse's small mercy. She sits alone in a gray room, tracing the glass over her daughter's face, whispering the same words over and over. A woman who built a world out of grief and watched it collapse.
