Synopsis/Details
The Release is an allegorical thriller that speaks to the fragility of our society and hard-won freedoms, especially for women. It’s "Handmaid’s Tale" meets "Logan’s Run" meets, or a spin on "The Grace Year," for women of a certain age.
At dawn on her 50th birthday, Lily’s life is shattered when she experiences first-hand what can happen in a society ruled by iron-fisted, corrupt old men. Barely escaping their grip, the entire fabric of Lily’s life and belief system is ripped apart. But as she stumbles into the arms of a strange man and a whole new world she never knew existed, Lily pieces together the truth about what’s been happening in her town, forcing her to decide whether to stay or risk her life to save her people from the tragedy that is The Release.
While a post-apocalyptic tale, its themes of misogyny and racial bias could unfortunately take place anywhere and anytime. The tale is in fact happening around us: the battle between the worst of humanity (those who will stop at nothing to maintain power) versus the best of humanity (those willing to sacrifice themselves for the good of others).
The script is unique in creating opportunities for talented Caucasian and Black primary and supporting actors aged 50+, an often-neglected demographic.
