Synopsis/Details
In 1970s New York, Franco Sartorre, a struggling South Bronx garment worker, dreams of giving his wife and three children a better life on Long Island. But with bills mounting and the garment industry changing, escape seems increasingly out of reach.
Franco’s widowed father, Pasquale, an Italian immigrant and retired pattern maker, remains the family’s anchor—and keeper of a mysterious figurine known as The Pizza Man, a good-luck charm that has followed the family through generations.
When an unexpected meeting with garment entrepreneur Syd Kaplan leads Franco on a harrowing journey across a city plunged into darkness, Franco confronts both the dangers of the streets and the uncertain future awaiting his children. Soon afterward, reduced hours and the loss of his health insurance push his family’s dream even further away.
Refusing to surrender, Franco considers risking what little security he has to build something of his own. With help from Pasquale, he discovers that a better life may require more than luck—it requires the courage to leave the familiar behind.
As the Sartorres prepare for a new beginning, The Pizza Man quietly reminds them that family, sacrifice and hope can survive even the darkest night.
