Carter Humbolt, a 12-year-old orphan with an obsession for pirates, masterminds a daring escape from his orphanage with his older brother Brad and Brad's girlfriend Darla. Using his makeshift gadgets and pirate-inspired cunning, Carter breaks into a museum to steal an authentic pirate handbook. Their plan goes awry when they're caught, but a wealthy eccentric named Phyllis Katzenbacher arrives to adopt Carter. In the confusion, Carter's friend Linn takes his place, leaving Carter free to continue his adventure.
The trio steals a boat from the local marina, joined by their orphanage friends Marcus, Yvette, and Louis. As they set sail for the Bahamas in search of legendary pirate treasure, they're pursued by the headstrong Major North from Valley Forge Military Academy, along with Darla's mother Ms. Roberts and two bumbling cadets.
At sea, the young crew encounters a pair of smugglers, Nestor and JJ. Carter, embracing his role as captain, cleverly outsmarts them using improvised weapons made from scuba gear. The smugglers, left adrift, vow revenge.
Upon reaching Eleuthera island, the kids follow clues from an ancient map Carter found in the museum. Their search leads them to a massive boulder with cryptic carvings. As they attempt to move it using physics and teamwork, they're joined by the vengeful smugglers and soon after by Major North's group.
Tensions rise as the diverse group navigates a perilous cave system filled with centuries-old booby traps. Carter's quick thinking and creative use of modern items (like marbles shot from a grenade launcher) help them overcome the deadly obstacles. Their persistence pays off when they discover an awe-inspiring treasure trove that surpasses their wildest dreams.
However, their triumph is short-lived. Once back at sea with their newfound wealth, Nestor and JJ reveal their true colors, attempting to steal the treasure and force the others to walk the plank. Just when all seems lost, Phyllis Katzenbacher arrives in an enormous luxury yacht, accompanied by Linn and a private army, turning the tables on the would-be thieves.
As the adventure concludes, the group returns to the marina where they're met by a cheering crowd and news crews. The boat's original owners arrive, initially angry but quickly placated when offered a share of the treasure. Pat Croce, the museum owner, confronts Carter about stealing the map but is impressed by the boy's pirate-like reasoning and negotiation skills.
Throughout their journey, relationships evolve: Brad and Darla grow closer, Ms. Roberts and Major North find unexpected romance, and even the cadets form a bond. Carter, who began the story longing for adventure and a sense of belonging, ends it with not just material wealth but also a newfound family in his diverse crew of misfits.
