The Blight

Forced into The Blight, a massive region of urban decay and abandonment in Detroit, a group of ordinary women band together to save themselves and the world from Lovecraftian horror. Linnie, a quiet librarian with few friends, is attacked on her way home from work. Saved by baseball bat-wielding Kat, Linnie discovers that something terrifying has infected the world around her. People are being mutated into raging Crazies, attacking anything that moves. The Crazies ignore anything less than death, harmed only by massive injury or the burning power of any light source. Linnie and Kat try to hunker down in Linnie’s apartment, joined by a next-door neighbor Bella. They are quickly run outside, as a group of Crazies chase them into The Blight. They meet street smart Abril, and all four seek refuge in an area school. Inside, the women discover scientists Suzanne and Kailey, a tense meeting that’s interrupted by the arrival of a mutated Dark Hound. After a narrow escape, they tavel deeper into The Blight, where they quickly meet gun-toting Chassity. Banding together, Linnie and the other six women journey to what Suzanne claims is a safe zone. Creeping through the streets, the women encounter Jennica and her date. When the Dark Hound strikes again, killing the date, the group of eight flee to the supposed safe zone. But when they arrive, it’s not safe, it’s the entrance to a secret lab responsible for all this terrifying evil. The Dark Hound attacks, kills Jennica and eviscerates Kat. Deeply hurt by the loss of her new friend, Linnie shoots and kills Suzanne, whose lies led them here. Linnie and the others enter the lab. The group makes it to a secured area where they meet scientists Tricia and Jocelyn, and lab assistant Chin. They also meet the patient zero of this night of terror—John, once a man dying of cancer, now a mutated monster covered in black tumors and with one flailing tentacle arm. Chassity guards the scientists as they seek a cure for John, hoping it might cure the insanity infecting the world. Chin leads Linnie and the others to shut down the surging machine that may have played a part in the growing apocalypse. The lab is far from safe, as Linnie and her group barely survive a battle with a group of Crazies. But they do manage to power down the device…which alerts them to the fact that the lab will enter total shutdown in only a few minutes. In the lab, the scientists prepare to inject the mutated John, hoping to cure him and end this disaster. But something goes horribly wrong, and John breaks free, killing Tricia as Chassity and the other two barely escape. In the hallway, the two groups meet up and immediately flee from the rampaging John. Chin leads them to an access ladder. When John catches up, he manages to kill Chin before the others can lock a door and keep him at bay. Back in The Blight, Linnie and the others finally find the safe zone—controlled by uncaring corporate security. Jocelyn and the security team want to reopen the lab, leaving Linnie and her friends behind, guarded by security Porter. When a frantic radio call sounds out, Porter, Linnie and everyone else rush to the reopened lab entrance. John escaped, wiped out the security team and Jocelyn. Linnie and her friends try to electrocute the monster. John ruthlessly kills Chassity, and it seems nothing can stop the monster. Desperate, the women train a series of work lights on him. The light finally burns and destroys the beast, leaving behind little more than ash and bone. Linnie, Bella, Kaylie, Abril, and Porter walk into the rising sun, finally free of The Blight and the hideous creatures that lurk in the dark.
