May, 1941.
The brand new German super battleship Bismarck along with the heavy cruiser Prinz Eugen, steams out of a fjord in Norway, to seek out and destroy Allied convoys that keep Great Britain alive and fighting against Hitler. Allied intelligence reports their movement to the British Admiralty in London, which dispatch the newest British battleship, the Prince of Wales, and one of its oldest but most powerful battlecruisers, the Hood, to intercept and destroy the German ships before they break out into the North Atlantic. The British intercept them at the Denmark Straits, where the Bismarck manages to destroy the Hood with one hit of its magazine, resulting in a catastrophic explosion that sends the ship to the bottom in three minutes, with all but three of its 1,400 crew going down with her.
Now, it is no longer a matter of strategic necessity. The British people want to avenge the humiliating loss of the Hood, and Prime Minister Winston Churchill orders almost every British warship in the Atlantic to join in the pursuit of the Bismarck. But the rough seas make it more and more difficult for the British to find the dreadnought, along with the ships running low on fuel. The British have just one chance to catch the Bismarck before it rampages through the Atlantic convoy routes, but good fortune smiles on them when aircraft from the carrier Ark Royal manage to score one torpedo hit in the mighty battleship’s rudder assembly, effectively crippling it. The British battleships King George V, and Rodney finally catch up to the lame, German colossus and batter it into a mass of burning steel, while British destroyers send it to the bottom with their torpedoes.
