Synopsis/Details
John Pym's "Great Remonstrance" in Parliament was the catalyst for the conflict. The English Civil War ended with the death of King Charles 1 in 1649.
The King's obduracy, during his trial, led to his death at the hands of Oliver Cromwell and other regicides.
Cromwell was present at the execution, but did not witness it. The short screenplay offers a supposition of what occurred afterwards.
Introspective, Cromwell stands beside the King's coffin before his body is laid to rest at Windsor Castle.
Cromwell is plagued with doubt by all that has occurred and what could happen next. His position could be untenable, but he intends to mould England into a just society. His ruminations desist when he is joined by his son-in-law, Henry Ireton.
Now, the Lord-Protector to be comes into his own and Ireton understands why many have underestimated Cromwell.
