Synopsis/Details
Steve Clay, a retired police officer, appears to be living a peaceful life in his Manhattan apartment when he is summoned by his superiors to investigate a series of murders targeting criminals in New York’s most dangerous neighborhoods. Early findings reveal that the killings are the work of a vigilante. But when Clay discovers troubling evidence placing him at the crime scenes, doubt and anxiety creep into the mind of one of New York’s most upright officers, who begins to wonder whether he might somehow be connected to these murders.
As he continues his investigation, the people around him—his friends, his girlfriend, his colleagues, his housekeeper, and the other women he sees—seem to be caught up in disturbing affairs where politics, espionage, and organized crime are deeply entangled.
As his life descends into violence, the case quickly grows beyond a simple criminal investigation and leads him into the upper echelons of international politics, where intrigue, conflict, terrorist threats, rivalries, and contract killings pull him into a labyrinth from which he may not escape.
What Clay does not know is that he is the subject of a secret experiment designed to test a new biotechnological weapon. He and his fellow homicide detectives grapple with an ethical dilemma: is it really worth hunting down the person responsible for killing criminals? Isn’t this mysterious vigilante—now pursued by the police—ultimately doing a service to the community by eliminating those who threaten the lives and property of law-abiding citizens? Troubled by so much uncertainty, Inspector Clay must nonetheless summon all his courage to confront the many dangers threatening his life and the lives of New Yorkers, while also dealing with the narrow-mindedness of his superiors and the boundless ambition and treachery of those who control the machinery of politics.
