Synopsis/Details

In the middle of a stormy night at a sparsely staffed rural hospital, ER doctor Maya Holloway thinks she’s facing another quiet shift. Instead, a critically ill patient arrives under armed escort—only to be executed in her trauma bay by a tactical team claiming the act is “necessary.”

Moments later, the local deputy who responds to her call for help is gunned down outside the hospital entrance.

The building is sealed. Communications are jammed. The team’s leader—calm, procedural, and chillingly rational—makes it clear: the patient was contaminated during an industrial accident involving the town’s water supply. Exposure would cause panic. Panic would cause collapse. Therefore, containment is required.

Maya is given a choice: cooperate and remain safe, or resist and become another variable.

Instead of surrendering, she fights back—not with brute force, but with intelligence. Using her knowledge of the hospital’s infrastructure, Maya manipulates oxygen lines, power circuits, and fire suppression systems to destabilize the tactical team’s control. Her goal becomes clear: locate and disable their signal jammer long enough to upload proof of the contamination to the outside world.

As tension mounts inside the darkened corridors, Maya’s past resurfaces—memories of a wartime medical decision that cost a life and still haunts her. This time, she refuses to sign off on another “necessary” death.

She succeeds in temporarily disabling the jammer and partially uploads video evidence before the team regains control. With law enforcement sirens approaching and their window of secrecy closing, the tactical unit withdraws with clinical precision—leaving behind no fingerprints, no records, and no accountability.

But 19% of the truth made it out.

By morning, local news outlets circulate a grainy clip raising questions about contamination and federal oversight. It’s not enough to dismantle the system—but it’s enough to create noise.

As Maya stands in the quiet hallway at dawn, she realizes she didn’t defeat the machine.

She only forced it to move.

In a final chilling reveal, an unseen federal office quietly reassigns the cleanup protocol to another region.

The system survives.

And somewhere else, it begins again.

The Writer: Gary Rose

I’m an multi-optioned screenwriter who, in a previous life, served as a police detective, mastering the delicate art of negotiating hostage situations. Retirement led me down a different path—teaching and writing—a journey that began with my first non-fiction book, which became an Amazon best-seller. That success ignited my passion for storytelling and introduced the world to my indomitable protagonist, FBI agent Jeannie Loomis. Believing that the ends justify the means, Jeannie has become the heart of a gripping 18-novel thriller series. My historical fiction script The Beautiful Beast was selected as a quarter-finalist in the 2025 PAGE competition. The Phantom Train script was selected in… Go to bio
