Chuck Dawson and Jack Harlan ride the rodeo circuit together — Chuck on bulls, Jack on broncs. They share a truck, a tailgate, and a dream they only talk about after dark: a ranch with a south-facing slope, a creek, and a porch big enough for two chairs.
But Chuck is hiding a spinal injury that is slowly killing the nerve function in his right hand. The surgery he needs costs forty-five thousand dollars he doesn't have — and would end his riding career. When Jack discovers the truth, he enters a championship ride on a notorious horse to win the money Chuck won't ask for. He goes down at seven seconds.
The fallout shatters everything. Chuck walks away on foot into the night. Jack picks up a young replacement rider who cheers him on but never tells him to stop. Chuck finds refuge on a Texas ranch run by Delia, a woman who lost her own husband to the same stubborn pride. Somewhere on Route 281, he finds the exact piece of land they always dreamed about — and drives past it.
When Jack is hospitalized after a second fall, Chuck drives through the night to reach him. In a room with wilting gas station flowers and an empty chair, two men who never say what matters finally do.
They heal. They go back to the circuit. And they head for Montana — broke, broken, and together.
