Synopsis/Details
In a dimly lit rec room, nine-year-old Madison — small, bespectacled, and ferociously sharp — dismantles a bully twice her size in a chess match without breaking a sweat. But this is just a glimpse of what's already been set in motion.
One month earlier, a powerful and secretive man named Schrader receives a covert tip from an affiliate: footage of a third-grade classroom, and one extraordinary student within it. Madison, the oddball loner who corrects her teacher on the finer points of chess strategy and lectures her classmates on the limits of therianthropy, has caught the attention of people who operate in the shadows. Her test scores are, in Schrader's word, impossible. His response: make it happen.
Enter Patterson, a smooth-talking recruiter who descends on the Fleck family's run-down home with a glossy brochure, a ten-thousand-dollar "family bonus," and a pitch about unlocking Madison's potential at an elite school in Virginia. Her parents, well-meaning but easily swayed, are quickly won over. Madison, meanwhile, is not so easily fooled — she clocked Patterson the moment he appeared in the doorway of her backyard shed, where she sketches desert rattlesnakes from life with unnerving precision.
The two sit down for a chess match, and before a single real move is played, Madison has already sized Patterson up, seen through his opening gambit, and made it clear she knows exactly why he's there. Patterson tips his king in surrender. The recruiter has been recruited — and the real game is just beginning.
