Synopsis/Details
Nineteen year-old Ryan is an aspiring rapper who lives with his uncle Sean and auntie Olivia in Birmingham UK while his terminally ill mum resides in a local hospital. Life has been tough for Ryan up to this point since his father and mother have divorced, and his father moved to America more than ten years prior. Sadly, the time has come, and Ryan’s mom succumbs to her illness and a funeral is announced. Ryan’s father, Grant, has decided to make the trip to the UK to not only attend the funeral, but to also patch up a long spell of inactivity and closeness that Ryan’s mother could only dream of. The two have agreed to a road trip from Birmingham, England to Inverness, Scotland with the final stop being a concert called Blast Beat…a showcase of up and coming talent in the rap world complete with open mic sessions. It is this venue where Ryan will debut his body of work and talent that he has for so many years developed. Fresh off the plane and arriving at Sean and Olivia’s, the tension between Grant and a now young adult version of the boy he once helped raise becomes center stage. Ryan only has a few memories to rely on and his mother’s testimony over the years about how Grant was a no-show alcoholic dad who was abusive and unfaithful. The fact that Grant was kicked out of the house and Ryan’s life is the only story Ryan knows, but it’s not the only story. He will soon find out that his mother was harboring some secrets of her own. Uncle Sean, an adept mechanic with a love for cars, has offered his Morris Minor (mini) project car as the vehicle for Ryan and Grant’s bonding trip. Tightly confined and underpowered, the mini will prove to be a most apt instrument in bringing the two together. The road to Blast Beat is paved with confrontation, drama, new faces and an awakening, as the two struggle to keep the trip alive. Having barely made it to the gig, a revelation about Grant and his relationship to his son may turn the event into a family brawl with Ryan missing his chance to perform. The big reveal and subsequent confrontation between Grant, Ryan, and his uncle Sean, will put relationships to the test. A grandiose performance at Blast Beat will be the catalyst for acceptance and resolve for all.
