Synopsis/Details
Twenty-two years ago, a secret biomedical laboratory beneath the city was abandoned after its experiments went horribly wrong. In the darkness, a children’s recording plays “The Itsy-Bitsy Spider” while something living crawls through the pipes. A tiny spider climbs from a faucet—only to be devoured by a much larger one.
In the present day, THE SPINDLE, a spectacular sixty-story glass tower, prepares for its grand opening during a violent storm. Fire Marshal MIA REYES arrives for a final inspection and immediately discovers locked emergency exits and irregularities in the building’s safety systems. The tower’s polished manager, CALVIN RUSK, pressures her to approve the occupancy certificate, but Mia refuses.
Complicating matters, Mia’s estranged husband, DANIEL, has brought their teenage daughter, SOPHIE, to see the new building. The tension between Mia and Daniel reveals a marriage fractured by Mia’s devotion to her work, while Sophie remains caught between parents who still care for each other but have forgotten how to communicate.
Deep beneath the tower, maintenance worker LUIS investigates a pressure problem in the water system. He discovers the sealed remains of the old laboratory, thick with webbing and abandoned specimen containers. A grotesque spider sprays him with corrosive venom and drags him into the darkness.
Mia, Daniel, Rusk, and security technician OWEN descend to investigate. They find Luis cocooned inside the laboratory and encounter spiders unlike anything found in nature—aggressive creatures capable of spraying acidic webbing. Daniel is bitten during their escape, and the venom begins spreading through his body.
Before Mia can order an evacuation, the tower loses power. Its automated systems malfunction, security communications fail, and emergency doors lock throughout the building. In the control room, security officer MARCUS is attacked and paralyzed before he can activate the alarms.
Thirty-five floors above, Sophie waits in the children’s center with teacher MELANIE and a group of young children. Spiders begin emerging from drains and ventilation ducts. When a giant spider attacks, Sophie discovers that the creatures react to the familiar nursery song playing through a karaoke machine. She uses the recording to draw the spider away, but Melanie is badly burned by its corrosive webbing.
Mia and Daniel reach the children’s center and destroy the creature with a fire extinguisher. Their relief is short-lived. The damaged fire-control system activates every sprinkler in the tower. Water pours through the building—and thousands of spiders wash from the pipes.
The water does not kill them.
It makes them climb.
As panicked residents fight their way through locked stairwells, the spiders spread through the tower, growing larger with each accelerated molt. Mia, Daniel, Sophie, and Melanie struggle upward through the chaos while Owen fights to regain control of the building. Sophie realizes the spiders are not merely responding to sound. They recognize the rhythm of the nursery rhyme and follow it.
Rusk secretly contacts DR. LENORA VOSS, the scientist who once operated the laboratory beneath the Spindle. Mia brings Voss inside through the flooded streets surrounding the tower. Voss reveals that her company engineered the spiders to produce synthetic surgical fibers. Their growth cycle was accelerated to increase silk production, but each generation became larger, more aggressive, and less controllable. Although the adult specimens were destroyed, dormant eggs survived beneath the tower for decades. Water awakened them, heat accelerated their development, and sunlight will harden their final exoskeletons.
When a dog-sized spider breaks through the windows of the thirty-fifth-floor sky lounge, Mia and the survivors fight it with improvised weapons. Daniel’s venom-induced paralysis worsens, but Voss manages to stabilize him. With the building rapidly becoming a nest, Mia develops a desperate plan: broadcast the nursery song through the old laboratory speakers, lure the spiders into the basement, then release superheated water from the tower’s boilers.
Rusk risks his life to enter the pump room and manually reverse a corroded intake valve while Mia, Daniel, and Voss take shelter behind reinforced observation glass. The song draws hundreds of spiders into the laboratory. At Mia’s signal, Owen releases the boiling water. The creatures are swept away and destroyed in the scalding torrent.
For a moment, it appears they have won.
Then a massive rooftop water tank begins splitting open.
The surviving Mother has used the water to complete her final molt. Now the size of an SUV, she emerges into the morning sunlight carrying thousands of translucent eggs. Once they hatch, the newborn spiders will release silk threads and ride the air currents beyond the tower, spreading across the city.
Mia orders Owen to unlock every exit and evacuate the remaining survivors. She, Rusk, and Voss climb to the roof while Daniel and Sophie reach the security control room. Their plan is to broadcast the song through a portable speaker, lure the Mother onto the window-washing platform, and drop her from the building.
When Owen’s recording proves corrupted, Sophie takes the microphone and sings the rhyme herself.
Her voice draws the Mother across the roof. Mia carries the speaker onto the platform, placing herself directly in the creature’s path. The release mechanism jams, forcing Rusk to attack it with a fire axe. The Mother seizes him and binds him to the collapsing platform. Knowing Mia cannot save him, Rusk cuts the final cable, sacrificing himself and dragging the monster over the edge.
But as Sophie sings the final line—“the itsy-bitsy spider climbed up the spout again”—the wounded Mother crawls back onto the roof through an exterior drainage pipe. Its egg sacs begin hatching in the sunlight.
Mia uses the creature’s own acid to weaken the last support beneath the damaged water tank. The tank collapses, crushing the Mother and flooding the roof. When the spider attacks once more, Mia rolls onto a raised rubber service pad and orders Owen to activate the rooftop generator. Electricity surges through the water, electrocuting the Mother and incinerating the newborn spiders.
With the nest destroyed and the last viable eggs burned, the surviving residents escape. Mia reunites with Daniel and Sophie, finally choosing her family over the job that has consumed her life. As they walk away from the shattered tower, a firefighter seals the damaged karaoke machine inside a hazardous-waste container.
Sophie asks if they can agree never to sing that song again.
Mia has only one answer.
“Deal.”
