Synopsis/Details

EVAN MERCER (38) tracks down bail jumpers from a cramped apartment above a Boston laundromat. His late father, FRANK, was a treasure hunter who spent thirty years chasing the missing pages of the Thomas Ahern journal and died broke and alone in a Lima hotel room. When those pages appear on a dark-web archive called the Undercroft, posted by a mysterious user named LAMPLIGHTER, Evan decodes their landmarks and pinpoints a remote valley in British Columbia. His sister LENA, an ER nurse who raised them both while Frank was away, begs him not to become their father. He goes anyway. In the wilderness, Evan finds the site, and a grizzly finds him. He survives the mauling by playing dead, and the bear's digging exposes what he came for: a seamless, glowing cylinder holding an engraved metal map. It points to a spot 7,300 meters down in the Aleutian Trench. But CONRAD VALE, a salvage magnate whose family owns the first half of the Ahern journal, has been watching who reads the Undercroft. His enforcer DECKER hunts Evan through the forest and nearly shoots him out of the sky as bush pilot GUS TALLMAN flies him to safety. Only one privately owned vehicle can reach that depth: the Lanternfish, a two-person submersible built by DR. TESS KAVANAGH, Evan's college love. He vanished from her life eight years ago, the week his father died. Tess proves the map's metal isn't from Earth, and with CAPTAIN HOLLIS BRANT and her technician KIP, they sail north. LAMPLIGHTER turns out to be ROSE AHERN (81), Thomas's dying granddaughter, who once met Frank and warns Evan that money gets in everywhere. It already has: Vale is paying Kip. On the trench floor, Evan and Tess discover a glowing garden of unknown creatures ringed around an alien chest. Inside is a golden map of the Pacific at the end of the last ice age, showing a vast green island where today there is only open ocean. As Vale's ship seizes the Halcyon above, Kip cuts their communications. Tess hides the map and lets Vale's robot steal the empty chest, but the struggle leaves the Lanternfish stranded on the bottom with jammed weights and falling heat. In the freezing dark, Tess finally tells Evan what her unanswered letter said: she loved him and wanted him to come to Boston. The weights break free and they surface into an armed standoff. Kip switches sides, Tess uses the sub's arm to disarm Decker, and Lena's promised phone call brings a Coast Guard rescue. Vale and his men are arrested for the armed seizure of the Halcyon. In Dutch Harbor, the golden map comes alive with a story: survivors of a crashed alien ship built a ring-shaped city on that lost Pacific island, befriended early humans, and sealed themselves in as the rising sea swallowed their land, leaving a trail for a humanity grown up enough to follow it. Rose gives Evan a letter Frank left for him years ago. It says the treasure was never the gold, it was the looking, and to bring somebody with him this time. Evan and Tess head for Cocos Island, a speck of rainforest off Costa Rica long rumored to hide pirate gold. Beneath the jungle, where treasure hunters never thought to dig, they press their hands to a sealed door. It opens onto a staircase and a lost city lighting up below, and together they step inside.
