Synopsis/Details
Elijah heads off with his grandfather from Philadelphia in the Fall of 1776 to visit his uncle in Tarrytown. His primary desire is only to return to Philadelphia to see his girlfriend again.
On their journey, he watches his grandfather pass from illness and must continue on with the body and the shady driver transporting them in his wagon. While stopping for the night at a ferry house, he meets an old Indian who warns him of the Hessians in New York. Emma the innkeeper expounds his fear as she tells of an old German legend and of the elite Hessian force of Jagers.
Arriving in Tarrytown, he feels exiled as he sees the Union-Jacks flying and realizes that the townsfolk, unlike those in Philadelphia, are on the side of the British. He is further isolated as his uncle is unpleased with the site Elijah and his first task becomes digging his grandfather’s grave.
He meets a neighbor girl, smitten with him, and her less-than-friendly brother with whom he goes to the White Plains Battle. The brother and he split up, joining opposing sides of the effort. Elijah fills in for a regular soldier and lights the fuse of the cannon that takes the head off one of the Jager fighters. The mounted headless body continues to charge and the legend of the Headless Horseman is born.
The horseman claims several victims in town and the neighbor girl convinces Elijah to meet her in the graveyard to see the terror. A final bloody showdown occurs that may get Elijah his wish.
