Synopsis/Details
Produced in part through crowdfunding in December 2024, this film will begin its festival run in Fall 2025. Ada is trying to live by the straight and narrow; she has steady work and provides for her son. One fateful night, driving home, a cyclist comes out of nowhere and she collides with him... after a moment of hesitation, she tries to save his life, but he expires on the scene. With police closing in and Ada on parole, she flees. She covers up any sign of the crime but can’t hide from her guilty conscience. Through a series of flashbacks, we get to know the man she hit and discover that his record wasn’t so clean- the film asks you to weigh both lives against each other. Would you have done any differently if you were Ada? It's the moral dilemma of YOUR HONOR meets the character dilemma of MAID. Follows the days around a tragic hit and run; getting to know the perpetrator in more detail after the crime and the victim in more detail before the crime; flipping expectations by the end. Conceived as a low-budget thriller, with a small cast and a guerilla crew, haunting the quiet streets of North Carolina towns. This short could function as a Proof of Concept for a longer feature entry but was devised as a stand-alone narrative. Both a tone poem and a commentary on the dichotomy of race and privilege, this story is a snapshot of our time. The short explores themes of morality, justice, and the nature of privilege. It examines the complexities of human behavior, the motives behind criminal acts, and the impact of hapless perpetrators on their families. What at first appears to be clear-cut becomes anything but as the characters' backstories are explored on both sides of the line - viewers should walk away from the experience questioning the very nature of right and wrong.
