Three years after Orion Air Flight 702 disappears over the Philippine Sea, the aircraft remains one of aviation’s greatest unsolved mysteries. No wreckage is recovered, and investigators cannot explain why the plane turned away from its route to Tokyo before vanishing from radar. Suspicion falls on Captain Daniel Mercer, leaving his wife, Claire, to defend his reputation while mourning Daniel and their fifteen-year-old son, Eli, who was traveling with him.
The truth is far more horrifying.
First Officer Evan Cole and Orion Air systems engineer Adrian Voss secretly seize control of Flight 702 during a routine communications handoff. Adrian disables the aircraft’s tracking systems while an incapacitating agent is released through the cabin ventilation system. He believes the passengers will be held as hostages and used during future negotiations.
Instead, Flight 702 lands at a concealed mountain airfield controlled by Khalid Razan, the calculating leader of an extremist organization. The aircraft is hidden inside an underground military hangar, invisible to satellites and search aircraft.
The passengers are separated immediately. Women and children are transported to a prison compound, while Daniel and the other adult male passengers are taken to a remote execution site. Forced to witness the massacre, Adrian realizes that Khalid deceived him from the beginning. Before Daniel is killed, he makes Adrian promise to protect Eli and return him to Claire.
Khalid uses the surviving captives to control Adrian. Flight 702 must be preserved, and any attempt at sabotage or escape will result in more executions. Adrian spends the next three years maintaining the aircraft while women are abused, families are divided, children are renamed, and captives are dispersed among guarded settlements.
Eli grows from a frightened teenager into a hardened young man who helps maintain the compound’s machinery. He despises Adrian for his part in the hijacking but reluctantly learns mechanical and aircraft systems from him. Together, they begin secretly documenting the names and locations of the surviving passengers.
Back in the United States, former investigator Maya Chen approaches Claire with evidence that Flight 702 may never have crashed. Satellite photographs taken shortly after the disappearance reveal unexplained activity around an abandoned mountain runway, but the images were stripped of their coordinates before Maya could identify the location.
At the hidden airfield, a heavily guarded device is installed in Flight 702’s cargo hold. Adrian recognizes it as a nuclear weapon.
Khalid reveals the final plan: Flight 702 will return from the dead and fly toward Washington, D.C. The organization will release prerecorded footage suggesting the missing passengers are aboard. If the United States allows the plane to continue, Washington will be destroyed. If the military shoots it down, the world will believe America killed the passengers it failed to rescue.
Either outcome becomes a victory.
Adrian secretly installs a transmitter and radio bypass in the aircraft. Eli gives him a handwritten list containing every known survivor, including children who no longer remember their original names. Adrian promises to transmit the list and the compound’s location once Flight 702 is airborne.
The airliner departs with Adrian, terrorist pilot Nadir Halek, a second pilot and several armed operatives aboard. When its transponder activates over the Pacific, military radar identifies the impossible return of Orion Air Flight 702.
News spreads worldwide. Claire is taken to the National Military Command Center, where she watches manipulated footage showing Eli alive. The aircraft refuses orders to land and announces that the missing passengers will die if it is attacked.
Air Force Colonel Jack Rourke intercepts the plane but cannot see through its blackened windows. While the military debates whether to destroy the aircraft, Adrian secretly contacts Rourke. He reveals that the passengers are not aboard, confirms the nuclear weapon and transmits the coordinates of the mountain compound along with the complete captive list.
When Claire sees that Eli is alive at the compound, she makes the most painful decision of her life. She tells the President to shoot down Flight 702 rather than allow the terrorists to use her hope to kill millions.
Adrian’s transmission is discovered. A violent struggle erupts inside the cockpit, killing the second pilot and leaving Nadir incapacitated. Adrian takes control and turns the aircraft away from the United States, heading back over open water.
At the prison compound, Eli, Mara and the other captives launch a desperate uprising as guards prepare to execute them. At the same time, American special operations forces race toward the coordinates Adrian transmitted.
With terrorists breaking through the cockpit door and a nuclear trigger about to be activated, Adrian begins a controlled descent toward the Pacific. Colonel Rourke offers to guide him to a carrier, but Adrian refuses to risk bringing the weapon near another vessel.
After confirming that every captive name and location was received, Adrian ditches Flight 702 in the ocean. The aircraft tears apart, carrying the nuclear device into deep water without detonation.
American forces storm the hidden compound and rescue more than one hundred surviving passengers and crew. Claire sees Eli alive on a military video feed and speaks to her son for the first time in three years.
Adrian also survives the crash. From a military hospital bed, handcuffed and under arrest for his role in the original hijacking, he watches Claire and Eli reunite. He has saved thousands of lives and kept his promise to Daniel—but nothing can erase the lives he helped destroy.
Flight 702: Final Approach is a high-concept, R-rated aviation thriller combining an international mystery, a nuclear countdown and an emotionally charged moral dilemma. Its 96-page screenplay delivers large cinematic stakes through a controlled number of primary locations—the airliner, hidden compound, underground hangar and military command center—making it especially suited for a premium streaming production. The central hook is immediately marketable, the confined aircraft sequences offer sustained suspense, and Adrian’s transformation from conspirator to reluctant savior provides a complex lead role capable of attracting a recognizable actor.
