Synopsis/Details

EMMA MARSH (29), fresh off a divorce, JESSICA REYES (30), a lawyer burning out under a mountain of case files, and NICOLE HALE (28), still chafing under her controlling father RICHARD, have been best friends for twenty years. When Jessica books a last-minute trip to Konoa Island — a postcard-perfect speck in the Pacific none of them have heard of — all three seize it as a chance to run from their lives, even if none of them can really afford it. They arrive to white sand, turquoise water, and a single cryptic warning from the resort concierge: stay on the marked paths after dark, and never go past the north point. The warning is easy to ignore once DANTE MORALES, JULIAN VOSS, and RAFAEL CRUZ — three magnetic, attentive men — sweep the women into a fling-filled island romance of catamaran days and torch-lit nights. But behind the resort, the men's charm drops away: they are partners in a trafficking operation that has quietly taken four women off Konoa in eighteen months, and Rafael, drawn to Nicole in ways he didn't plan for, is the only one starting to hesitate. Half a world away, Richard sees the same missing-persons broadcast and panics — not to a call to Nicole, who would only dig in out of spite, but to MARCUS KANE, a retired FBI agent and old family friend now running a two-room private investigation office in Brooklyn. Twenty-two years ago, Nicole's dying mother extracted one promise from Marcus: if her daughter was ever truly in danger, he would be the one who came for her, not the police. Marcus flies to Konoa alone, off the books, and begins quietly pulling at the same thread the local police have been paid to ignore — while the women, unaware anything is wrong, fall deeper for the men hunting them. As Marcus's investigation closes in — aided by a local fisherman, TOMAS, whose niece is among the missing — the operation moves to take Emma, Jessica, and Nicole to a boat waiting off the island's forbidden north point. What follows is a violent, fast-moving fight for the women's lives on open water, as Marcus — armed with nothing but experience, a promise, and a rapidly shrinking window — races to reach the cove before the boat, and the truth of the island, disappears for good. In the aftermath, the women survive, the operation is exposed, and the mystery of Marcus's true connection to Nicole finally surfaces: her mother's dying wish, honored for twenty-two years without a single visit, without Nicole ever knowing he existed. Richard and Nicole begin to repair what fear and control had broken between them, and the friends fly home changed — carrying with them the knowledge that paradise, from just far enough up, still looks perfect.
