Synopsis/Details
In the early morning hours of April 18, 1906, as most of Northern California sleeps, Agnews State Hospital—one of the largest psychiatric institutions in the region—stands as a self-contained world of order, routine, and quiet control. Patients arrive by train, often misunderstood, mislabeled, or simply inconvenient to society. Inside, their lives unfold behind locked doors and rigid systems.
Then, at 5:12 a.m., the earth begins to move.
What follows is not just destruction—but chaos without boundaries.
The massive brick structure, anchored by its towering clocktower, collapses in waves over nearly two minutes of relentless shaking. Walls split open. Floors give way. Patients and staff alike are buried, trapped, or thrown into a waking nightmare as the institution designed to contain them becomes their prison.
Amid the devastation, Clara, a compassionate and determined nurse, emerges as an unlikely leader. With the hospital in ruins and aftershocks continuing to threaten what remains, she joins forces with Dr. Stockton and a small group of attendants to organize rescue efforts—both inside the collapsing structure and across the open grounds where survivors begin to gather.
Outside, order struggles to re-form. Makeshift triage takes shape. Sheets torn from the wreckage become tents for the injured. Women lie beneath fragile shelter while men are left exposed on the cold grass. And in the confusion, some patients simply… walk away.
Inside, the danger is far from over.
As Clara leads a team back into the unstable ruins, they navigate shifting corridors, collapsing ceilings, and the constant groan of a building still falling apart. Lives are saved—but at a cost. In a defining moment, Clara is forced to choose between two patients she cannot save at once—an impossible decision that will haunt her long after the dust settles.
Meanwhile, Elias, a young attendant, faces his own moral reckoning when he must abandon a trapped man to save himself, confronting the brutal truth of survival in a place where not everyone can be rescued.
As day turns to dusk, the full scope of the tragedy becomes clear. The once-sprawling institution is reduced to ruin. The dead are counted. The injured cling to life. And a small number of patients remain unaccounted for—vanished into the surrounding land, their fates unknown.
Among them is Elisa—a quiet, fragile presence who is last seen walking away from the wreckage… and into the horizon.
AGNEWS is a gripping, emotionally charged historical drama in the vein of United 93 and Chernobyl—a story not just about disaster, but about humanity under pressure, the cost of survival, and the haunting reality that in moments of crisis… not everyone is found.
