Synopsis/Details
Five light-years from Earth, a spacefaring civilization called the Gandlions has found something they cannot reach alone: Aetherion, a living, breathable ocean world three light-years past their own sun that is fading and losing light enery. When a Gandlion ship arrives in Earth orbit, its envoys offer humanity an extraordinary trade — one year teaching NASA's scientists how to build an engine drive system fast enough to reach Aetherion, in exchange for one year spent living among us, and believing in us, before either species commits a single life to the journey. What follows isn't a war story. It's a harder one: a year of classrooms and sabotage, grief and friendship, political fear and slow-won faith between two species who need each other more than either wants to admit. When the finished ship finally launches, humanity isn't just crossing five light-years of space — it's finding out what kind of neighbor it's ready to become, on Earth, and on the world waiting at the other end of the journey. The tension never comes from the Gandlions themselves — it comes from us. A senator convinced that the visit could be a liability. A defense contractor willing to steal alien propulsion data for a private buyer. An engine that nearly kills the engineer building it. A species publicly deciding, in real time and under every camera on Earth, whether it's actually capable of the patience contact requires. The Gandlions, meanwhile, carry a quieter stake of their own: a sun that is losing energy, a generation running out of time, and a captain who has to report home whether the humans he's grown to respect are actually worth the risk his own people are taking on them.
